FAQ

Dear:
I am a sixth-grade student at Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN. I'm working on a documentary film on the topic of The Great Wall, and I think you might be able to help me with information. Could you answer some questions for my research?
1. Did the men that were working in the Great Wall ever return to there families after they left to go work?
2. Why did everyone who died get buried in the wall? Why didn't they go back to their family's when they died working on it?
3. Did anyone in China disagree with the making of the Great Wall? Did they do anything against it?

Thank you for your time and trouble.

Sincerely,
John M

From my Teacher....

Greetings,
In the interest of authentic, performance-based learning, my middle-school students are reaching out to experts about China as they prepare a documentary film about a topic of their choice. If you can, I appreciate very much your willingness to answer a few questions they have, taking just a few minutes of your time, I hope. I’ve tried to make sure they’re asking “expert” questions, after having done basic research already. Thanks for your assistance, and feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Hi John,

1) It was more than 2000 years ago when China decided to build the Great Wall. The decision was made by the men who ruled the nation but not by ordinary people. In those days the governers -- Kings or Emperors of China, have the supreme power. Many people were forced to work on the Great Wall, some died due to the severe environment and heavy workload. There were neither healthcare system nor proper medical treatments, even food or water could be a problem then. In Ming dynasty the main builders were soldiers. However, as a military defending system, establishing the Great Wall was the best choice to defend the nomadic mogolians from northern China. In Ming dynasty the main workforce were soldiers.

2) As far as I know, people getting burried into the Great Wall was only a myth. Nevertheless, in ancient China, there were brutal rulers doing this to his people who failed, or fell behind schedule, on building up the wall of a fortress, but not for the Great Wall.

3) The voice of against has always been accompanying the Great Wall, from within and outside the nation's governing groups, from one dynasty to another. Most of them considered the task was a huge waste of money, labor and resource. However, the Wall divided the northern nomad and the southern agrarian civilization, and therefore successfully provided effective protection to the central China from invasions from the north through thousands of years. The Great Wall was the choice of the history, there was simply no better solution to defend the culture and civilization in China from the northern invaders in the era of cold weapon. Nowadays, the Great Wall is still the largest structure human has ever built, and is one of the most significant miracles in human history.

Hope it helps, any further doubts and questions please just let me know. Say hello to Alan.
